  • Cannot be included in web content, must be loaded and read as a separate file.
  • A CSV is just a plain text file – it has no information / formatting / anything, other than the literal words/numbers typed into it.
  • PNG, a Portable Network Graphics file, aims to replace GIF and TIFF file format.

The internet as we know it first emerged in the 1990s. But the story of web-ready images starts four years before. We’re going to discuss what they are, how they originated, and how to use them in the right ways.

PPMd is a PPM-based algorithm based on Dmitry Shkarin’s PPMdH source code. It provides a very good compression ratio for plain text files while maintaining the same speed and memory requirements for both compression and extraction. 7Z extension designates a popular archiving format, created for 7-Zip, a modern file archiver application written by Igor Pavlov and released as freeware and Open Source software. 7-Zip was originally developed for Microsoft Windows platforms, and ported by p7zip (POSIX-7Zip) project team on Unix platforms.

HEIF, or High Efficiency Image Format, is the newest file type on this list; the format was designed in 2015 and was soon implemented by Apple to store iPhone photos. While the standard HTML element doesn’t support compatibility fallbacks for images, the element does. Photographs typically fare well with lossy compression (depending on the encoder’s configuration). This makes JPEG and WebP good choices for photographs, with JPEG being more compatible but WebP perhaps offering better compression. To maximize quality and minimize download time, consider providing both using a fallback with WebP as the first choice and JPEG as the second. Otherwise, JPEG is the safe choice for compatibility. XBM files were the first to be supported on the Web, but are no longer used and should be avoided, as their format has potential security concerns.
